"Web 2.0 is the business revolution in the computer industry caused by the move to the Internet as platform, and an attempt to understand the rules for success on that new platform."
Blogs, vlogs, permalinks, YouTube, Facebook and MySpace have all been bundled under this new collective expression. The film below was created by Michael Wesch, Asssistant Professor of Cultural Anthropology at Kansas State University. Although not directly concerned with Web 2.0, it touches upon the current phenomenon of a user-centralised and influenced internet.
The key themes of Web 2.0 are:
the web as a platform
data as a driving force
network effects created by an architecture of participation
innovation in the assembly of systems and sites composed by pulling together features from distributed, independent developers (a kind of "open source" development)
lightweight business models enabled by syndication of content and of service
an end to the software-adoption cycle (the so-called "perpetual beta")
software above the level of a single device, leveraging the power of the "Long Tail"
ease of picking-up by early adopter
